AoR PBeM: Rules & Interpretations
Fast and slow games
For speed of play, we practice the rule that the token bid should include orders as to whether the player wants to:
- Remove any Shortage/Surplus (in case he is first in Order of Play)
- Buy an extra card (using Urban Ascendency).
Independently moderated games
Easy: Send the Bids to the GM.
Player-moderated games
We have pondered this somewhat, but found the most practical solution to be based on mutual trust: We currently send our bids to all other players, properly marking the bid with the word SECRET in the subject line of the message.
An alternative approach (which we haven't discussed) is that used by the "Empires in the Middle-Ages" PBeM, which uses PGP encryption as a way of ensuring secrecy.
Occasionally, a player doesn't allocate enough tokens to a competition, and in PBeM play this may lead to quite some confusion. After a brief discussion, we have decided to use the following rule to handle such events, named after the PBeM game where the rule was first used:
AoR5 model
The general consensus of opinion seems to be that in a FTF game the mistake
would occur and be corrected at that instant. This seems like a reasonable
standard to follow. The portion of a move that occurs prior to the rule violation is
set in stone; the portion that occurs after that point is redone.
The moderator determines:
- Who gets the expansion card for most new markets
- any Interest & Profit
- Income
- any Misery reduction
The Moderator requests a Shortage/Surplus roll from one of the online dice-servers, the result being distributed to all players.
Any bonus card or majority fine is determined.
